Some people are directed skyward until they decide to take wrong turns and they end up falling faster than they came up. This time around, it was Jared Fogle who came to the public’s attention as a spokesperson for the Subway restaurant. He was also featured in many advertising campaigns after losing weight by eating sandwiches on the subway. In 2015, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison for sexual activity with a minor and distribution of child pornography.

Famous as “the subway guy,” Jared Scott Fogle was born on August 23, 1977 in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was raised in a Jewish home by his parents, Norman and Adrienne Fogle, alongside two younger siblings.

For his education, Jared went to Indianapolis North Central High School, where he graduated in 1995, then moved to Indiana University. After graduating, he worked for American Trans Air for a short time.

Growing up, Fogle had an eating disorder that caused him to become obese. He continued with the state until he went to college. In 1998, he reportedly only started eating two Subway sandwiches a day, while exercising. In less than a year, the 425-pound man was down to 245 pounds.

This caused his dorm mate to write an article about him which made the front page of the student newspaper. The next place the story would land was in the Men’s Health article, “Stupid Diets That Work.”

This started his journey to fame and fortune. In 2000, he began appearing in advertising campaigns for Subway restaurants, and later in “Jared Has Aides,” an episode of South Park. He also made WWE appearances in 2009 and 2011, while giving speeches. However, his most significant work is on the Metro, which claims to have helped triple its revenue between 1998 and 2011.

From a successful career that he was lucky to build, Jared Fogle had an estimated fortune of $15 million in 2013. However, as a result of his crime and sentences, he lost a huge chunk of his fortune after being forced to pay $1.4 million to 14 of his victims.. More so, he split $7 million after his divorce from Katie McLaughlin.

Way back in 2004, he founded the Jared Foundation through which he promised to raise awareness about childhood obesity issues, but as would later be found, he did not spend any money on the project.

With a career that was rising quite quickly, JaredFolge made inappropriate comments to reporter Rochelle Herman-Walrond about middle school-aged girls she reported to the police. In years to come, the FBI would use it to get tapes and other information about him, but it got nowhere.

However, he quickly realized he had gotten child pornography from Russell Taylor, who had been convicted in a child pornography case.

In 2015, his home was raided by Indiana State Police and FBI investigators, taking away his computers and electronic equipment. Immediately after that, Subway suspended ties with him before cutting him completely.

Apart from his job, he also lost his marriage as his wife, Katie McLaughlin, whom he married in 2010, filed for and obtained a divorce from him. Prior to marrying McLaughlin, Jared was first married to Elizabeth Christie in 2001, but in 2007 the union ended in divorce.

In the investigations that followed, it was only found that he spoke of the abuse of minors aged 9 to 16, he was also in possession of child pornography and had had sexual relations with a minor. For his crimes, he was serving up to 50 years in prison if convicted. So he made a deal by pleading guilty to having illicit sex with a minor and receiving and distributing child pornography.

In his defense, his lawyers claimed that as a result of his weight loss, the subway guy replaced his compulsive eating disorder with hypersexuality, including what he called mild pedophilia. However, he was sentenced to 15 years and 8 months in prison.

When will he be released?

The defense team filed an appeal seeking to have his sentence reduced, but it was upheld in 2016. Based on this, Jared Fogle will remain behind bars for at least 13 years before he can be released for good behavior. Therefore, he could be absent on July 11, 2029.
